2013-05-08 Mount Arbel, Golan Heights, Har Bental Outlook
Head to Mount Arbel, standing 700 feet above the Sea of Galilee; the cliffs provide breath-taking views stretching from the Golan Heights to the Jordan River valley. Descend from the peak along an adventurous trail, which includes using pegs fixed into the rock.
Once at the bottom, follow the dirt path to the caves. The natural caves were used from prehistoric times and later as hideouts for the Jews who fought against the Greeks and Romans. Later the caves became a great fortress, which had secret passages, halls and cisterns.
Drive to the Golan Heights and visit Umm el-Kanatir an ancient site on the western slopes of the Golan Heights where a well preserved ancient Jewish Synagogue can be seen.
Apparently the ancient Jewish village thrived from the linen industry, but it was abandoned after the devastating earthquake of 749 CE.
Next we’ll head to the Har Bental overlook, the abandoned Israeli bunker. Here we can look deep into Syria and learn about the village of Kunetra and the 1967 & 1973 Wars. Walk underground in the bunkers and see what accommodations were like for the soldiers manning the outpost.
